I currently live in New Mexico with my boyfriend and beautiful daughter in The Retro Palace. I'm currently a student double-majoring in Cosmetology and Architectural Drafting. I spend what little free time I have knitting, crocheting, sewing, and almost any other project I have time for. I do occasionally eat and shower, but only if there is no knitting to be done.

Handmade Holidays

Alright, I know I said I would get knitting pics up soon, and I promise, they are coming! Maybe tomorrow, if there is enough light for pictures when I get home from class. And if I remember. Heh.
Moving on...

In addition to my (alleged) knitting, I enjoy a few other crafty endeavours, like sewing. I don't do a ton of it, but every once in a while I get on a sewing kick. I am always surprised by the near instant (compared to knitting, anyway) gratification that I get from sewing something. I am thinking about whipping up some hand-sewn gifts this Christmas. Not entirely sure what yet, but I've got my eye on some things! The Sew, Mama, Sew! blog is having their Handmade Holidays series for the third year now. Every day in November they post a handful of tutorials, mostly for sewing projects, for things that would make great gifts. I've been scouring the last two years' posts, as well, and starting to kind of overwhelm myself with ideas. I suppose I should settle down and pick a few and get to work!

Speaking of work, I need to get back on my homework and studying. I'll leave you guys (is there really more than one of you??) with a few of my favorite tutorials from today's searching!

Simple Keychains
(how fun would it be to let Monsterette "personalize" these?)

Beanbag Chair
(Monsterette would LOVE this in her room)

No-Sew Laptop Cozy
(I want one of these! It would be great for my college-faring bro and sis, too. How cute would some applique or simple embroidery be on these?)

Vintage

I've always had a place in my heart for all things vintage. Buttons, post cards, seed packets, jewelry, you name it, especially if it's art deco. I was pretty overjoyed when I stumbled upon this blog. She also had a love for vintage, and finds the coolest ways to incorporate vintage stuff into her crafts. it's got my mind working for some vintage inspired Christmas gifts- maybe ornaments? Little stockings? Printed sachets? Not quite sure yet... A contest may be in order! Do I have enough readers left for a contest? I guess we'll see.

So, here's the deal. Leave a comment with your suggestion for a smallish vintage Christmas gift. Everyone who leaves a comment with a suggestion will be entered, and I'll do a random pick for a winner. Winner will get some of whatever I decide to make for Christmas, and some other little goodies, probably yarn since most of you are knitters. If you're not a knitter, I'll figure something else out.

Check out The Vintage Moth and Vintage Printable for some more inspiration or to get some vintage images for yourself!

I really love the mask I made! I got one of those plastic masks from Hobby Lobby. I covered it with some cool textured felt, added some sparklies, the pretty pink butterflies, feathers, and some ties. super easy, and I think it came out great! Some close-up pictures:

Doin' Stuff

Gah. Still insanely busy. Enjoying it, though! Here's a little bit of what I've been up to, at least today:

Knitting! I do still knit! I started the second jaywalker (one of my goals, ya know!), and that's going along well enough. I definitely haven't been knitting as much as I'd like to. Hopefully after this upcoming SCA event, that'll change a bit- I should have more time to knit.

Speaking of SCA, I have my chemise done, which I'll be wearing under my dress, and then a corded bodice, which will go over that. The corded bodice is kind of like a corset, but not so stuffy and hard to wear. The one I made is functional, but not perfect- If I have time, I might do it over. I also drafted the pattern for the bodice of my dress today- yaay! It took forever, but now I should ahve a decent idea of how to make a bodice. I'll be doing a little test bodice tonight with some leftover muslin, and then on to my dress! Woo!

On that note, I should be doing a formal dress diary post soonish.

Hmmm, what else have I been doing....oh! SANDING! I'm actually getting close to finishing the sanding on the coffee table. Hopefully soon I'll be able prime it and paint it, and we'll be able to use it again. That'll be nice, since the coffee table does double duty as our dining room table. our actual dining room table is my sewing table, and when I'm not sewing, it holds crap. We don't have any chairs for it, though, hence why we don't ever use it for eating at.

I don't know if I mentioned this or not, but I've also been running a gaming session for the Hubbster and Erin on Saturday nights. A lot of me little bits of free time go into planning for that. It's been a lot of fun, though, and I ahve a TON of stuff to do before this Saturday! I'm going to try to be nice, since I almost killed them last weekend. MWAHAHAHAHA.

I think I'm going to arse around on the computer for a bit. (That's for you, Katie!)

Book Report: In Stitches

I finally picked up this book last week, after having my eye on it since it hit the shelves. I really love Amy Butler's fabrics, and now I have something else of hers to love! Out of over 25 patterns in this book, I love every single one of them. I would make and use everything in there! I think it will be a really good motivation for me to sew more. After all, I have this awesome sewing machine. It should get some use, right? I think that anyone who likes to sew and has a lot of the basics down (this book has more than a few patterns with some advanced sewing) should pick up this book. I love it! Hopefully I'll have some newly sewn objects to show you in the near future...

A History of the Craft Part Two

There are a few other crafty type things I do, or would like to do. The main thing I would like to learn how to do is embroidery. I've really been inspired by Sublime Stitching. I really love her patterns, and someday soon I'll give them a try! I've already envisioned cool tea towels for the kitchen and some bitchin' little outfits for Joie. How cute would that be? I've promised myself, though, that I'm going to finish Christmas knitting before I pick up a new craft. Damn that Christmas knitting, ruining all of my fun.

Another thing I think would be cool to do is temari balls. Even though they are rather complicated, I think they are so pretty, and would make some awesome gifts for people. If you have been to the new Village Wools, they have a glass box of them by the register. Someday I'll order the books I need and try them out. Hopefully my crafty patience is up for it!

I also like paper crafts, like scrapbooking and card making. I haven't gotten too into it, mostly because scrapbooking is a more expensive and very time consuming hobby. Now that Joie is here, though, I think it would be really cool to do a first year scrapbook for her. Card making is a little cheaper, but I just haven't really had the time or motivation to get into it, although I think it would be a lot of fun. Plus, that ties in nicely with my notecard obsession. (More on that in the future.)

That's pretty much it for my crafty side, although I love to create things. I love to do home decor type stuff, stitch markers (yes, someday you lovely helpers will get some), and all kinds of artsy type things. There are so many cool things that you can do with so many different kinds of stuff. I love to go to the craft stores and just get inspired, although it has been a while since I have had the time or the finances to really do that. Plus, that freakin' Christmas knitting is holding me back. Must finish Christmas knitting... Must finish Christmas knitting...

A History of the Craft Part One

I thought I would let you all in on how I became the Craft Mistress I have become. Before I start, though, I would like to say thanks to Sara for a wonderful idea to blog about!

I have always been creative, spending a lot of time in my youth with crayons, homemade paper mache, siczzors, glue, string, pretty much anything I could get my hands on and mold into something different. When I was about nine, my mom taught me how to do counted cross-stitch. I made a few ornaments, and even designed a Ninja Turtle for my little brother. I did a lot of it, and got better and better, my crowning achievement to date being an angel I did for my mom for Christmas a few years ago. It has been a while since I've done it, much less finished anything, but I do like to do it. I just with there were cooler designs and something to with them besides baby items, tea towels, and framed hangings.

I sew quite a bit, too. This was the natural progression from cross-stitch. Or, at least in my mind it was. My mom sewed a lot as well, and made me and my siblings numerous outfits when we were younger. I've done one quilt- a Mother's Day quilt for my mom a few years ago. It was small, lap size, and very basic- just squares and pre-bought quilted backing. I did do some little yarn tails at the square corners, though. With beautiful quilt patterns like these, though, it is something I would love to try again. I have also sewn a lot of clothes for Joie, a few Halloween costumes, a handful of purses, and I'm sure lots of other things that don't come to mind. I really enjoy the quickness of sewing, and how you can finish a small project in just a few hours.

When I was about 18, I picked up knitting. My Grandma knits, but I had never asked to learn, nor had she ever offered to teach me. So I picked up one of those kits to teach myself knitting, a skein of some baby blue Red Heart, and started a garter stitch scarf. I was using size 6 needles, knit about 4 inches, got frustrated trying to purl, and gave it up. When I got pregnant, I decided I wanted to knit a baby blanket. I picked up some more Red Heart, the needles I needed, and started a basket weave blanket. It was the very first knitted project I had ever finished! I was very proud. It took me forever. I even made matching baby booties. Sadly, since then, the blanket has sat in a box in the closet, because I hate to have my daughter endure such scratchy acrylic. Although, she has worn the booties.

My First Project

Being a left-handed knitter has proved challenging, as almost every pattern, stitch instruction, and chart is written for right handers. I can usually reverse directions easily. Most things, I don't have to. There are a few things that are effected if left unchanged, though, such as cable directions and such. Since the baby blanket, I have at least gone for the soft acrylics when I use them, expanded my collection of knitting needles, acquired some stash, and have a list of patterns I want to knit a mile long.Things I haven't tried yet, but will soon, include color work, cables, and socks. I sure have come a long way in under two years!

Crocheting is another fibery hobby I have recently picked up. I think it is a ton easier than knitting. Many knitters who try to learn it after they have been knitting don't like it as much, but I think it is great, because the stitches have such a different look than their knitted cousins. The downside, though, is that there aren't as many cool patterns out there for crochet. With the help of Debbie Stoller (author of both Stitch N' Bitch books plus Stitch N' Bitch Crochet) and the online mag Crochet Me, there are a handful of rockin' crochet patterns out there. I've crocheted a scarf and a hat, a few dishclothes, and am working on a wrap. I'm sure there will be more in my future. Although, not a much as knitting.

Stay tuned for Part Two!

My Swanky New PSP

No, not one of those newfangled hand-held whatchamahoosits. Close though! Well, not really. Okay, not even close. Introducing, my Project Spectrum Purse! That's right, today, the last day of Project Spectrum, with no planning at all, I whipped out a cute little shoulder tote in some cool neutral fabric I had lying around. As some of you may know (and if you didn't, I'm about to tell you), August was neutral month for Project Spectrum. So, without further ado, I present to you in all its neutral glory, my new purse!

Purse

This is the front. The black ribbon goes around the entire purse as an elegant accent. I lined the inside with a plain black- the same fabric I used to make the shoulder strap. I really love it! The fabric is great- it is some fabric James picked out over a year ago that I used to make his requested pillowcase. Here is another view.

Now, for some shits n' giggles, here is a cool stormy sunset picture that I took a few weeks back.

New Things

I know, I'm still a wretched slacker, but with so many things competing for my time, your lucky you get updates at all! So, sit back and enjoy one of the rare posts from me, and quit whining! This one is a good one too- filled with all kinds of new goodies!

First off, I would like to announce to everyone that I am having an affair. (Good thing James doesn't read this thing, huh?)That's right- a dirty, illicit, scandalous affair. I love my other like I have never loved one before. Sleek and smooth, and especially handy- what else could a girl want? Want a picture? Of course you do. You might want to get the children out of the room first- this picture bares it all!

Swanky Machine

There it is, folks. My new love. That, my friends, is a Brother CS-6000i. It has a needle threader. It makes 6 different custom button holes completely automatically. It has over 60 stitches, most of them customizable with length and width. It has an LCD display for my stitch selection. A button to raise and lower my needle. It came with all the geegaws and doodads a girl could possibly want. I am in love with this machine. It is slick and sews like a dream. I find myself staring at its glory from time to time. I wish I could just take some coke or something and stay up for days and sew myself a complete new wardrobe with accessories to match. That is how wonderful this machine is. Sorry, James. You're still my favorite non-appliance!

In more new things, I picked up the book Stupid Sock Creatures about a week ago. I loved just reading the book, and I bought some socks ( I know, I should be recycling socks, but these are for friends and I don't think they'll want my ratty old socks made into toys.) to make a few with this week. So if you're a friend, be prepared to receive one of these in the coming months. I could even sew little clothes for them! Oooh, the possibilities....

More new things! (Isn't this exciting?!) Here is Joie's new ability. It is not quite perfected, so it results in a lot of falling, banging her head on various things, and face planting into even more things. At least she's having fun...

Joie Standing

Yep. Standing. She pulls herself up on pretty much everything she can. And a few things she thinks she can, but can't. It was a little unnerving the first day she started to do this- things on the coffee table are no longer out of reach, and she falls a lot more so we have to watch her closer to make sure she won't seriously hurt herself. I don't know if I'm ready for her to start terrorizing the apartment in new ways! Oh, my baby is growing up so fast.

Lets see, what else is new...It was James' birthday on the 17th- we got together with friends in Santa Fe and had a little Greek food, some belly dancing, and some presents. It was a fun time. That was the last time I saw our friends Dave and Marie- they moved to Seattle this weekend. We're really going to miss them- they're fun people. Although now we have a good reason to go visit Seattle! I've always wanted to go- I'm a bit afraid I'll fall in love and want to move, though. Hopefully sometime next year we'll get out there.

Alright, Joie is screaming at me from her crib (standing up, of course) which means I should quit typing and start mommy-ing. Adieu...
